Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, this fixed‑term role (10 months) provides hands‑on, operational health and safety support across the Port. You’ll work closely with leaders, teams, contractors, and partners to manage risk, strengthen capability, and continuously improve health and safety performance and culture.

This is a practical, people‑focused opportunity suited to someone who enjoys being visible on the ground, influencing through relationships, and supporting others to do their work safely and well.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide practical, day‑to‑day health and safety advice and support to managers, supervisors, and teams.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing maintenance of health and safety systems and processes.
  • Assist with risk assessments, critical risk assurance activities, and safety observations.
  • Support incident, hazard, and near‑miss reporting, including tracking and follow‑up of corrective actions.
  • Assist with contractor health and safety management, permits to work, and hazardous substance audits.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and assurance activities (scheduled and unscheduled).
  • Support toolbox talks, inductions, and health and safety training activities.
  • Prepare reports, insights, and data to support management and committee decision‑making.
  • Identify trends and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and projects.
  • Actively promote a positive, safety‑first culture through everyday interactions and leadership behaviours.
  • Model Napier Port values in all interactions and decision‑making.

What You’ll Bring

  • A qualification in Health and Safety or a related field.
  • At least three years’ experience in a Health & Safety Advisor role or similar position.
  • Working knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation and Maritime guidelines.
  • A practical, solutions‑focused approach with the confidence to engage at all levels.
  • Strong relationship‑building and communication skills.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • High levels of professionalism, integrity, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Full, current New Zealand driver licence.

Experience in an operational, industrial, infrastructure, logistics, or port environment is highly desirable, as is familiarity with safety management systems such as ISO 45001 or platforms like SAI360.
